Vad pratar musikbranschen om?

Den 24-25 februari gick Digital Music Forum East av stapeln i New York ­­‒ en konferens där många av världens ledande personer inom musikbranschen deltog. Bland panelerna kunde man se ett stort utbud av både nya och gamla ämnen. Det talades fortfarande mycket om upphovsrätten och hur man ska gå vidare med de rättsliga problem som piratkopieringen innebär, men det diskuterades också hoppfullt om sociala medier och de senaste årens största spelmode, musikspel, som nya potentiella inkomstbringare.

Mobila program var ett hett ämne – båda i sammanhanget sociala nätverk där artisten kan komma i direktkontakt med sina fans (t.ex. exklusiva videos, chatta, twitter osv.) och applikationer för distribution av musik och video. Vad är nästa steg i utvecklingen, och vad kan man förvänta sig i takt med att fler och fler mobila plattformar får s.k. ”app-stores”, stora virtuella affärer, där man kan ladda ned tusentals program?

Ett annat tema som har varit återkommande de senaste åren är konsertbranschen. Hur kan den nya tekniken förstärka konsertupplevelsen och marknadsföra och producera nya inkomstkällor kring livearrangemang?

Musikvideon håller på att få ett uppsving igen och räknas återigen bli en av de viktigaste marknadsföringsmetoderna de senaste 25 åren. Produktionskostnaderna går ner och dynamiska, sociala, online- och mobila nätverk har tagit över från kabel-tv som plattform. Vilka nya möjligheter innebär marknaden för onlinevideo för musikindustrins framtid?

I takt med att musikspel som Guitar Hero, Singstar och Rock Band blir populära så skapas det en ny koppling mellan spel och musik. Vad är nästa steg? Vad innebär det här för möjligheter för artister och låtskapare att promota och sälja sin musik?

Sociala nätverk är överallt ‒ hur kan musikindustrin tjäna på trafiken och uppmärksamheten som genereras av sociala nätverk? Kan det öka musikförsäljning online eller andra inkomstkällor? Kommer nästa våg av sociala medier innebära nya fördelar för musikindustrin?

PANEL 1: THE CONCERT BUSINESS:
How Technology is Changing the Business
While CD sales continue to fall and radio is in the constant state of evolution, the concert business is booming creating new opportunities across the board. In particular, technology is creating new opportunities and experiences for artists, performers, promoters, vendors and fans. From social networks to text messaging to broadband video to online recommendation and billing systems, technology is enhancing the live music experience. This panel will discuss how technologies are being used to better connect with fans and promote, produce and create new revenue opportunities around live events.

PANEL 3: MOBILE APPS: What’s Next?
Music apps for smart phones and social networks are the hot new way for artists to keep fans updated with new information, exclusive videos, chat rooms, and Twitter-style news feeds. This panel will discuss the opportunities around music apps with a focus on how artists and labels and using apps to promote and even distribute music. How is Apple’s App Store evolving? What can we expect with the launch of the RIM/BlackBerry and Android app stores?  What kind of innovation are we seeing with apps in overseas markets? What is the next frontier of mobile apps and the music industry?

PANEL 4B: I Want My Music Videos Anytime, Anywhere, on Any Device!
Music videos, which served as one of the most important promotional and marketing tool during much of the past twenty-five years, are back, but the model is different as production costs have gone down and viral, social, online and mobile networks have replaced cable television as the platforms of choice. This panel will discuss opportunities and business models for the music industry utilizing online video platforms. What impact will a robust market for online video have on the future of the music industry? What types of deals are being done? What is happening with video in the mobile space? How are music videos fitting into the promotional plans in the digital age?

PANEL 5A: Games & Music

The popularity of music-themed games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band has focused attention on the growing relationship between the game and music industries. This panel will explore this relationship further by looking at opportunities for composers and rights holders to sell and promote their music through games as well as the opportunity for new innovative game projects bring together pop culture, music and games. What’s next for the collaboration between the gaming and the music industries? What are the opportunities and challenges for making the most out of the creation of this new phenomenon?

PANEL 6A: Social Networks &  Music
This panel of leading experts will discuss the latest developments in social media with a focus on the relationship between social networks and the music industry. How can the music industry benefit from the traffic and buzz generated by social networks? Can this translate into online music sales or tangible benefits? What’s next in this exciting industry sector? Will the next wave of social media benefit the music industry?

    Hej Viktor! Jag var inte på Digital Music Forum i år, så vi närstuderade bara vad som stod på webben. Det är min medarbetare Jens som tagit fram underlaget och skrivit ihop det mesta, främst med tanke på analysbrevet.
