Dansk film i kris

Tobias Tobias

Men läste just:

Danish film industry in crisis.

Danish film industry seems to have lost momentum, both artistically and economically. Though the Danish audience was only second to the French in preferring national productions to foreign, only 4 out of 26 feature-films from 2007 are estimated to make a surplus for the production companies.

Nimbus Film, known for the Dogma features ’The Celebration’ and ’Mifune’, have made losses on five projects, adding to an already negative net capital. The company behind this year’s official Danish Academy nominee and box-office hit, ’Kunsten at græde i kor’ (The Art of Crying), is in the same situation, and producer Thomas Stenderup reveals, that heavy DVD-sales are hoped to save the investment. Stenderup is far from optimistic: ”If a better balance between costs and revenue isn’t found, at least 2-3 companies will go under within the next year.”

Lars von Trier’s company Zentropa is apparently selling parts of its compound in order to bolster the economy, according to Danish daily, Jyllands Posten. Zentropa-CEO Peter Aalbæk Jensen denies this: ”Selling an unused storagebuilding that will be turned into flats is simply a reasonable business”, he says, and puts the blame on an industry with a tendency of playing it safe, clinging to the same writers and stars, thereby losing the artistic edge that keeps the audience awake.
